On Thursday, Feb. 22 the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs arranged an event called Black Alumni Meet & Greet. It was held from 6-8 p.m. in Curtiss Hall.
In this event, Black Alumni of SVSU shared their college experience and current professional life. SVSU president Dr. George Grant Jr. was the main guest of the event.
The program has several scheduled activities. Check-in began at 5:45 p.m. when refreshments and snacks were provided. A welcoming speech followed with an introduction to special guests.
One activity was a bingo game based around peoples personalities. Everyone filled the rows and columns on their own cards with their hobbies, and then were asked to connect with others and find out their individual hobbies.
The event also included speed networking: students were given a question to talk with the alumni in attendance.
The guest speaker, Sam Tillmon, provided an informative speech. He explained his history with SVSU starting in 2005 double major in Kinesiology and Biochemistry and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2010. He was an assistant director of career service SVSU for 4 years.
“I am from Detroit.” He said. “I decided to come Saginaw Valley and run my track here. It wasn’t my plan. So, the first think I want to tell you is, life isn’t always going to the way you plan for it together.”
He also shared his experience of applying for jobs and his experiences when he worked with the career service of SVSU helps students with their career plans and select majors.
Overall, he said students to keep grades good and do jobs that must help them to build up a good resume.
