Black History Month on campus

February is Black History Month, which means celebrating the history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. At Saginaw Valley State University, several student organizations and campus offices are hosting events throughout the month to do just that. Originally established as Negro History Week in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the…

Get organized and write more things down this semester

Even though the semester just began, it won’t be long before the homework piles up. The best course of action during the slow beginning is to plan ahead and get organized. A planner doesn’t need to be aesthetic to be effective, as long as it works. Whether it’s a digital tool or physical agenda, an…

Dating apps are damaging to users’ mental health

Americans crave efficiency, and dating apps promised them just that. For people juggling work, school, and the pressure of social media, the idea of “swiping right” for a quick fix seems like progress, but actually, it’s proving to be damaging to mental health. The half-hearted swiping isn’t love, it’s exhausting. According to Forbes, 78% of…

Practical tips for surviving the Michigan winter

Michigan winters are not to be taken lightly. Here are some obvious, yet effective, tips to stay sane and even enjoy the season. Special election scheduled for Michigan’s 35th District

The tri-cities are about to decide which two candidates will represent each party in the upcoming state Senate election, and the student vote is expected to make a difference.   On Feb. 3, voters in Michigan’s 35th district, encompassing much of Saginaw, Midland, and Bay counties, will vote to decide which two candidates will represent their parties in the race for the empty state Senate seat. The…

Hockey team hires new head coach

Saginaw Valley State University’s hockey e-board fired Brandon Orth in his third season as head coach following continued struggles resulting in an eight-game losing streak. The e-board hired Mel Rettell, who most recently coached the Tawas Braves Varsity hockey team for four years.  Joe Blair, e-board vice president, commented on the decision.   “It was really hard for us five,” he stated.…

Watching musicals can be a great way to learn history

Unfortunately, when most people think of history, their memory is overcrowded with dates and facts that don’t always feel meaningful. Many students associate history with textbooks and long chapters, but I believe this mindset can change if we look beyond the printed page.  History can be a really powerful lesson when someone becomes immersed in…
