Women’s Basketball fall to Huskies

Michigan Tech defeated the women’s basketball team this Thursday with a final score of 84-46. The Huskies outperformed in offense, capitalizing on the failed intercepts by the Cardinals.

The Huskies managed to avoid Cardinal defense throughout the game, maintaining a substantial shooting advantage, with a 2:1 shot ratio over the Cardinals. Kendall Standfest, a freshman Husky, led the scoreboard with 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds from the Cardinals.

The game was tied twice, with the Cardinals demonstrating a competitive spirit. Megan McCalla, the team’s forward led the team with nine points and made one crucial assist to regain control.

Lydia Meredith contributed eight  points  to  the  scoreboard. Meredith struggled to navigate Tech’s game plan, resulting in five turnovers. Meredith also missed some crucial three-point jump shots in the second and third quarters, conceding more points to the Huskies.

Saniaa Walker, the team’s guard caused some trouble for the Huskies, making five rebounds and chipping in seven points. Walker was able to make small changes to the scoreboard after making three successful free throws.

Ava Locklear also added seven points to the scorecard and hauled in a personal high seven rebounds. By limiting any free ball opportunities, Locklear ’s successful attempts did not amount to any substantial change in the scoreboard as the coordination with McCalla and Meredith fell through.

Aleshia Jones dragged in a game- high four steals. Jones’s aggressive style did not weaken the Husky offense as they took advantage of the many missed opportunities by the Cardinals.

Off the line, the Cardinals dominated the Huskies by leading the game in the first half of the first quarter. McCalla made the first free throw, propelling the Cardinals to the lead but Standfest from Tech was able to break through the Cardinal’s strategy with an assist and a three-pointer.

Tech went on a 9-0 scoring streak in the second half, which tipped the scales in their favor as the Cardinals were not able to recover. A couple attempts were made by the Cardinals to balance Tech’s attack in the second half but were short-lived as failed throws and mounting fouls fueled Tech’s momentum.

Tech wrapped up their victory in the last two quarters with a 6-2 run in the final minutes. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in the GLIAC.
