Men’s Basketball suffer last-second loss to Tech

The men’s basketball team lost to Michigan Tech last Thursday, 68-66. The match slipped away from the Cardinals, who were in the lead until the second half.

The Huskies were off to a great start as Marcus Tomashek, the towering guard made the first three-point jump shot and went on to score 29 points. Niko Newsome and Freddie McIntosh quickly balanced the score sheet with a three-pointer and a jump shot, respectively.

Toodles Seal, SVSU’s leading scorer with 18 points, doubled in by scoring back-to-back three-pointers. Netting another three-pointer pushed the Cardinals ahead, 25-24.

The Cardinals carried over the momentum as they made an 11-0 run well into the first half. The scoreboard read 33-24 and was aided by Elijah Mattingly who achieved his second double-double this season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Before heading to the locker room, SVSU managed a 35-27 advantage.

The second half consisted of Freddie McIntosh and Bryson Huckeby drilling three-pointers, pushing the Cardinals to an imposing 41-30 lead. McIntosh contributed 16 points, while Huckeby added 10.

Tech rose through the ranks with a 6-0 run narrowing the lead. It was a race against time as they scored five points with seven minutes until the whistle blew. Tech was playing for high stakes, as they were one free throw away from taking the lead to 63-62.

McIntosh scored a three-pointer in a desperate attempt to take the game.  The Huskies retaliated with four free throws to balance the game 66-66. Despite the timeout, the Cardinals could not find their grip as Toodles missed a potential game- winning three-pointer with under two minutes left in the clock.

Mcintosh made another jumpshot, which landed in the hands of Tech’s Josh Terrian. The pressure cracked SVSU’s offense as Huckeby’s last three-point attempt landed in Tomashek’s hands. He sealed the deal for Tech with just a second until timeout.

The game’s stats reflected SVSU’s strong  offensive  lineup.  42.4% from the floor and 52% from three- pointers were not enough, however, for the Cardinals to reclaim their lead. SVSU substitutes did not need time to break ground as they scored 37 points.
