On Thursday, February 15, 2024, the Saginaw Valley State University women’s basketball team traveled to Big Rapids, Michigan to take on the Bulldogs of Ferris State University. The Cardinals took home a win over the Bulldogs 47-44. The SVSU women’s team was able to keep the Bulldogs 30 points under their average scoring per game as well.

Highlights of the game were eight points by Tyler Scheid and Lydia Meredith to seven from Alenshia Jones and Victoria Stafford. Jessica Massey and Emma Dziezgowski scored six points each. Furthermore, Saniaa Walker had six rebounds and Meredith totaled three steals.

Additionally, the Cardinals kept the Bulldogs shooting percentage to 30.4% from the floor and 11.1% beyond the arc.

To begin the game Meredith had the first basket of the game. Ferris came back a took a one-point lead before Massey made a basket for a 4-3 Cardinal lead. This did not last long as the Bulldogs took a big lead of eleven points.

Luckily, Dziezgowski was able to cut the lead to four before the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started with a basket from the Bulldogs, but Makalya Mau scored three points in retaliation. The Bulldogs came back to take the lead with a 6-2 run before Scheid made two baskets bringing the lead down to 2.

Heading into half-time the score was 24-21 with Ferris in the lead. 

The start of the third quarter, saw the Bulldogs gain four more points to extend their lead. Massey was able to cut their lead with a shot from the charity stripe and a layup. Scheid also came in with a bucket to bring the score to 28-27 FSU leading. After an exchange of buckets, the Bulldogs scored the last one before the end of the quarter giving them a four-point lead.

The Cardinal were able to turn the game around in the fourth quarter. They were able to score 16 points while FSU only scored nine points. Two free throws one by Scheid and one by Stafford were able to tie the game 35-35 during the first few minutes.

Ferris pushed back with a 5-0 run. Jones brought the lead down to two followed by Walker who added two free throws to tie the game 40-40. While the Bulldogs gained a two-point lead it did not last long.

The Cardinals took the lead when Stafford made a free throw and Meredith made a layup with 30 seconds to go. Jones was able to put four more on the board securing the win.

This win means SVSU moves to the seven-seed in the GLIAC. Watch the women’s basketball team at their next home game at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 22.
