SVSU women’s basketball team took on Lake Superior State (LSSU) on Thursday, January 25 for a home game.
This thrilling match kept the spectators on the edge of their seats till the final seconds.
The final score was in favor of the Cardinals 64-63. As a team, SVSU was on fire and had 15 steals and caused the Lakers to commit 22 turnovers.
Key scorers for SVSU were Victoria Stafford with 20 points and Emma Dziezgowski with 13 points.
Tyler Scheid scored eight points and got four rebounds. Finally, Lydia Meredith gained the team seven points and five steals.
The game started with a jump shot from Stafford followed by a three-pointer from Jones.
The Cardinals led the game 10-6 and then had a 4-0 run with Stafford and Scheid layups.
However, Lake State had two three-point shots leading to a six-point lead.
Quickly, the Cardinals made up the deficit with a 9-3 run in the later part of the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, LSSU was up 21-19.
The second quarter started with LSSU scoring three more points before two free throws by Jessica Massey and two shots by Stafford cut their lead to one point.
The game continued to heat up with the Lakers scoring six points in a row before Dziezgowski hit a jump shot and three points to cut their lead down.
Before halftime, a pair of free throws from the Lakers put them up before Stafford hit a jumper and made the final shot during a foul. These last shots gave the Cardinals the lead 35-34 going into halftime.
The third quarter was back and forth in terms of scoring until LSSU scored two straight threes.
This gave them the lead 48-43. This quarter was the best performance from the Lakers as they won the quarter by nine points.
Nearing the end of the third quarter a free throw by Scheild and Stafford scoring a bucket bright the score to 55- 47 with the Lakers in the lead.
Massey started the fourth quarter with a bucket, but the Lakers responded with their own basket.
Laurn Sollom was able to make two free throws however cutting the Lakers’ lead to six points.
LSSU was able to score another three-pointer extending their lead to nine points.
The Cardinals showed their tenacity scoring five straight free throws. Two were from Dziezgowski, two from Scheid, and one from Meredith making the score 60-56 in favor of the Lakers. Late in the fourth quarter.
SVSU had a 7-1 run with Stafford hitting a layup and a Scheid free throw. With 11 seconds left, SVSU tied the game 63-63.
The win was coming down to the wire, but Stafford drew a foul. She made the first foul shot bringing the score to 64-63 in favor of the Cardinals. She missed the second shot, but the Lakers were unable to retaliate leading to a win for SVSU.
The Cardinal will play at home again against Davenport on February 8th at 6:00 p.m. in O’Neil Arena.
