Review: Proper Taco offers great food at low prices

A cheap restaurant that still serves good food can be hard to come by. Of course, there’s fast food but that’s not the same thing.

Occasionally I want to be able to sit down and eat at a restaurant without spending a crazy amount of money.

One restaurant that provides that is Proper Taco in Midland.

It’s only a 25-minute drive from campus and offers a great atmosphere for students.

The restaurant is a cute little corner shop that’s decorated uniquely inside. It’s full of plants and there always playing something on the tv.

They also have a little gift shop area with funny shirts, tote bags, cards, and candles.

The staff has always been very friendly with us, which makes the experience even better.

I’ve been there a few different times and I’ve never been disappointed.

I normally opt for the Benjamin (all their tacos are named like this) which is a black bean spread with house salsa, sliced white onions, and cilantro. The price for this taco is $5.

I’m a creature of habit and tend to always get that one but they have a variety of different options. Some of the options include chicken, pork, or chorizo all which come in a variety of different spice levels, with one even including ghost pepper cheese.

The ghost pepper cheese isn’t to be messed with. Don’t get this if you don’t like spicy. The flavor of the taco is amazing, but the heat is enough to make a grown man cry, literally.

The one I get isn’t too spicy but that’s the way I prefer it. The cilantro flavor is great but not too overpowering, however I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t like cilantro.

The salsa also comes in a variety of different spice levels, mild, medium, and hot. I always opt for the mild, but you could add medium if you prefer your taco a bit spicier.

Currently they have special Halloween tacos that are all named after different bands, including My Bloody Valentine and Rob Zombie.

Besides tacos, they also have nachos, chips and dips, and vegetarian options. The nachos come in three different sizes and range in price from $9 to $14 depending on the size.

Water is free but they also sell glass bottles of Mexican coke, which go great with their tacos, as well as glass bottles of Sprite and Jarritos.

The food always comes out very fast. I’ve never had to wait longer than a few minutes. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating as well as a to go option. Meals can be ordered ahead on their website.

Proper Taco is also at a great location. It’s located directly in downtown Midland. It makes a great opportunity to get a cheap and delicious taco and then take a walk-through Midland’s gorgeous downtown.

Overall, I would give Proper Taco a 10/10. Their food is an amazing quality for the price, they have tons of different options, and their customer service is always amazing. If you’re ever in the area, it’s a must try.
