Ditch the popcorn and grab a spoon to eat cereal with SVSU’s new RSO, the Cereal Club!
The Cereal Club held its first meeting on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Student Life Center Program Room, bringing together around 20 students for an evening of cereal and conversation.
Students enjoyed bowls of Honey Nut Cheerios, Froot Loops, Cap’n Crunch, Cocoa Pebbles, and more while watching the 2006 film, “Over the Hedge.” Both whole milk and non-dairy options were available, ensuring everyone had something to enjoy.

The E-Board consists of Alex Kulmacz as president, Emily Meredith as vice secretary, and Eric Durette as treasurer.
Club president, junior professional and technical writing major, Alex Kulmacz, said the idea came after seeing a similar organization at the University of Michigan. “It seemed like a really fun way for people to meet up and have a good time,” he said.

The club’s main purpose is to provide students a casual space to connect with peers and relax.
“It’s unbelievably low stress,” Kulmacz said. “You can meet up and eat cereal. You could go to one meeting and be totally fine. You can stay for however long you need to.”
Kulmacz said the club hopes to continue offering a variety of cereals and milk options, adjusting based on students’ preferences.
“It’s very important to have options for people that have dietary restrictions,” he said. “We plan on having a wide variety for each night.”

One of the students who attended, Senior theater major Paige Tuckerman, said she came to support her friends club and appreciated the relaxed environment.
“[SVSU] doesn’t have a lot of chill clubs,” she said. “Clubs like this promote mental health — it’s very easy to come with friends, watch a movie, listen to music, and just hang out. It’s not structured, so that’s really nice.”
Looking ahead, the E-Board members hope to select movies that compliment the season and aim for nostalgic films.
“We’re looking at what time of year it is and [trying to] coincide with that,” Kulmacz said. If we’re able to do one in December, we’d probably do a holiday movie. All the movies we’re going for have a Saturday-morning-cartoon kind of vibe — probably a lot of nostalgic ones.”
In addition to movie nights, the club is exploring themed events and collaborations with other RSOs, including a potential “Cereal Killers” event with the Criminal Justice Club.
The club is currently working on securing funding for future meetings. The first meeting’s supplies were funded by Res Life in collaboration with University Village West RAs.
“[The cereal club] gives people a chance to get out and meet each other, even if it’s over something silly, like [eating] cereal,” attendee fifth year EEO major Dillen Phillips said.
