The women’s basketball team suffered a loss in an away game last Thursday. Despite leading in the first quarter, the Cardinals were not able to secure the game as the scoreboard read 71-67 at the end.
SVSU’s forward, Megan McCalla led the charge by making a layup in the first minute. McCalla scored 19 points for the team and made 4 rebounds as she was in sync with Saniaa Walker in the first half.
Saniaa Walker, SVSU’s guard, made strides, scoring 19 points. Walker scored a 9-14 from the floor and 1-2 outside the three-point line. Making three rebounds, Walker was able to create fast-break opportunities, which helped the team lead in the first half.
Lydia Meredith, the team guard chimed in with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and three steals. The Cardinals’ eight-point lead in the first quarter, courtesy of Walker, Mccalla and Meredith was snatched by Wayne State as they stormed back and took a 37-36 lead in the second quarter.
Taylor Thompson and Shea Tripp, both forwards from Wayne State, took matters into their own hands as their jump shots and high number of rebounds caused trouble for the Cardinals.
The third quarter consisted of the Cardinals making the attempts of making a successful comeback. Ava Locklear and Aleshia Jones added timely three-pointers to balance the scorecard 46-46.
Gabi Lutchka and Tripp held down the fort for Wayne State as their layups and crucial rebounds made the score 55-59 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter ultimately came down to teamwork. The score gap remained as both teams did not take any chances with three-pointers.
Alyssa Leister, Wayne State’s guard, managed to score a three-pointer, but did not falter the Cardinals’ spirit.
McCalla’s last minute layup closed the gap as the score was 65-67.
