On Thursday, February 8th, the Saginaw Valley Cardinals Women’s Basketball Team went against the Davenport Panthers at the O’Neil arena at SVSU.
In the first quarter, forward and senior Victoria Stafford, from Oregon, made the first layup of the game and scored the first two points for the Cardinals.
Staffords shot was followed by a Jump Shot by guard and Junior Aleshia Jones, hailing from Kansas.
After this, way followed by yet another layup by Stafford that put the Cardinals at an advantage over the Panthers 7-0 within the first few minutes of the game.
After calling a thirty second timeout, Davenport suffered several missed jumpshots, only for Jones to make yet another three point score on the Panthers.
The Panthers’ Alexa Kolnitys allowed the Panthers to receive their first point of the game through a free throw, which then caused a defense lock up between the two names until Saniaa Walker, Junior and Guard, was able to make a layup that brought the Cardinals forward another two points.
Another jumpshot from Stafford was followed with Davenport’s Kaci Walker making a layup, which changed the score 3-14, with the Cardinals still leading over the Panthers by eleven points total.
Massey made a double layup and free throw, which helped the Cardinals continue their lead.
The cardnals stayed in command, even as Davenport’s Walker made a jump shot, helping their team end the first quarter 5-17.
Starting the second quarter, Lydia Meredith, a sophomore and guard for the Cardinals made a layup to set the tone.
Meanwhile Davenport began to make efforts to even the score, including a jumpshot by Makenna Bryant, and a lay up by Ellie Toney.
With the score holding 9-19, the Cardinals were able to continue their score over Davenport through the second quarter, where the score ended 15-22.
Third quarter was again started with another point for the Cardinals, pushed forward by another Jumpshot from Aleshia Jones.
In the end, the Cardinals scored over the Davenport Panthers 59-39, with this win, the hopes are the SVSU Women’s Basketball team will be able to succeed in their consequent games, with the next one being against Grand Valley on Saturday, February 10th.
