Calling all students interested in the realm of criminal justice, serial killers, psychology and law. The True Crime Club covers all of these topics through real cases, ranging from cold cases that happened in the ‘70s to current killings.
They meet every Tuesday at 8 p.m. both physically in Science East 222 and virtually over Microsoft Teams, and anyone is welcome to join.
Last week, they covered the 2022 University of Idaho killings and the specifics behind them, and the winner of the Kahoot at the end of the meeting received a Starbucks gift card.
The president of the RSO is Rhea Schultz, a third-year international business major with a political science minor.
“True crime is a diverse topic that allows many concentrations and people to intersect,” she said. “More students should join True Crime Club because it is really engaging and has come a long way. We have weekly activities and prizes.”
“It started when founder [and] SVSU alum, Mackenzie Victory, would bring her TV into one of the MJB student lounges,” Schultz said. “She would just show and share with her friends and interested residents passing by a personal PowerPoint she made with her theory and opinions about a case.”
Meetings with the True Crime Club consist of a PowerPoint with facts about the case, pictures and specifics. Attendees engage in discussion during this time, sharing their thoughts, opinions and theories about what happened or who committed the crime.
Every week, members vote about what topic or case they want to cover in a poll on the RSO’s Instagram story.
“It feels great to analyze interesting cases, the stories and fact patterns are profound,” Schultz said. “I swear every week I learn a trait of a predator or murder, which is never a bad thing to know and recognize to avoid. Understanding a threat is power.”
“I am very fortunate and inspired to be part of and see how True Crime Club has grown and developed,” she explained. “I get to practice applying my organizational, event planning, and business skills at the same as dissecting a focus of interest. That is the dream.”
The next meeting will take place in Science East 222 on Tues., Feb. 13. The link to the Teams conference and case being covered any given week is on their Instagram: @truecrimeclubsvsu. The link can also be found on CORQ.
