From 7 to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, the Hustle and Soul Decades Dance was held by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs in the TSAR.
The dance itself was silent with headphones passed out to all in attendance. Listeners could even flip between two different color-coded channels on the headphones so everyone could have a great listening experience.
The TSAR was decorated with 90s themed table settings and pink streamers hung from the ceiling. Loads of food like tacos, Mexican rice, and desserts were available throughout the whole dance for free.
Many of the attendees dressed up in 90s style clothing to participate in a costume contest near the end of the dance. The contest had multiple categories in which people could participate such as individual, couple, and group. In addition to the costume contest, there were multiple raffle prizes awarded throughout the dance such as yard games, a yoga mat, and card games.
Lazaria Bennett-Lewis of the SVSU Student Association and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and one of the hosts of the event speaks about the event:
“This event, I can’t even express what it really does for students of color,” she said.
Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and the night was surely a success for the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
“The Office of Multicultural does stuff like this all the time, and this is just one of their many events that they host during Black History Month.” She said. “They have a whole calendar [of events] every year and it is because not all offices let people do that, and the Student Association provides sponsorships, so we are able to afford it.”

“It gives them a place to express themselves and to come out and have fun and it is really a cultural celebration of African American culture altogether,” Bennett-Lewis said. “So, it gives them a place to express themselves, be comfortable, and to just be them.”
