Women in Healthcare, an RSO at Saginaw Valley is currently accepting new members for the 2024 Winter semester.
The club meets in Science East, Room 126 on the first Tuesday of every month, with an E board comprised of Haleigh Holdwick as president, Ashley Novicoff as vice president and social media chair, Ashley Spencer as club secretary, Jenna Bailey as treasurer; and Alaina Briggs, outreach coordinator.
The Women in Healthcare RSO is a group of women pursuing careers in the healthcare world supporting each other and building community. They focus on empowering and educating women who choose to major in healthcare-related fields. Another major focus of the RSO is volunteering and engaging with the community.
On Tuesday, Jan. 23, and Tuesday, Jan. 30, they hosted informational events for prospective members to get a feel for the RSO. The meetings also acted as a social event, with ice-breaker games and an excursion afterwards.
Haleigh Holdwick, a third-year Medical and Laboratory Science major and RSO’s president spoke out about the club.
“We strive to empower women pursuing careers in all different fields of medicine by creating a welcoming community where all members can come together knowing that they have a safe space on campus to grow into the healthcare professional they want to be,” she said.
They accept all healthcare-related majors, including, but not limited to, nursing, pre-medical, pre-dental, medical laboratory science, occupational therapy, public health, health science, rehabilitation medicine, exercise science, social work, and neuroscience.
“[inclusion] is important to us,” Holdwick said “we know that each woman has their own path, and we want to support them in the best way possible along their journey.”
On a usual Tuesday meeting with the Women in Healthcare, you can expect to learn more about your peers through team building and social activities, Holdwick explained. They also host de-stress nights with movies and snacks when members are feeling overwhelmed.
They also host guest speakers in their meetings as often as possible. “[Guest speakers] educate us on their careers and offer advice on how they succeeded in programs that are like ours,” Holdwick said. “At our next meeting, we will be holding a resume workshop where we will learn effective strategies to use when applying for jobs in healthcare.”
The last activity Holdwick discussed was the numerous volunteer opportunities available to members.
“Each semester, we hold a handful of on-campus volunteer opportunities,” she said. “This semester, we are planning on making blankets for nursing homes, and looking for more opportunities to go into the community and help where our resources are needed.”
The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 6 in Science East 126 at 6:30 PM.
