Have you ever just laid in your room all day and wondered how you can become more connected? Or felt out of place on campus? Well, don’t lose hope because there is a range of club sports that could be the thing you have been looking for.

Joining a club sport can have a plethora of benefits and can connect you to a great network of people. If you have ever felt stressed – which we all have – sports are a great outlet to relieve that. There is also a range of sports you can choose from whether you want to play a typical sport or want to try something more out of the box.

Not only will playing a club sport help your mental health, but it will also benefit your physical health. If you lack motivation to take a walk – like I often do – club sports offer an alternative where you can get active while having fun and being surrounded by friends.

Additionally, joining a club sport can add to your resume and positively impact your professional profile. Employers will see you have teamwork, collaboration, time management, commitment, communication, and more skills by adding a club sport to your resume.

Joining a club sport can have a positive impact on multiple areas of your life and enhance your college experience. You may get to travel for free with club sports teams and the possibility of missing class which I know will have students running to sign up.

One sport that takes members who have yet to gain experience is club sailing. They sail International 420 Dinghy sailboats in the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association. They also travel from Ohio State to Purdue and all across Michigan to compete.

Piper Luke, a second-year majoring in Political Science on the Pre-law track, is the commodore for the sport.

“The sailing community is both competitive and welcoming,” she said. “At tournaments and even at practice, you’re surrounded by opportunities to connect with experienced sailors and coaches.”

The club hosts meetings on Thursday in SE 117 at 7 p.m. and is currently recruiting new members. Additional information can be found on the Instagram svsusailingteam or their website https://svsusailing.weebly.com/.

Another club sport that you do not need any experience with is Women’s Rugby. Rugby is a mix between soccer and football. The Women’s Rugby team encourages everyone to join, no experience is required!

The team is active year-round! The winter is when they compete in tournaments, making them more laid back than other sports.

They practice from 7-9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at the Ryder. But no worries if you can’t make both practices each week! Follow them on their Instagram svsuwomensrugby for more information.

Joining a club sport can change your life forever so why wait any longer to join? Now, get out there and find your place on campus at https://www.svsu.edu/campusrecreation/clubsports/.
