“Dear Vince, I’m someone who is looking for more things to do off of SVSU’s campus, but don’t know where to begin. What are some of the best places to eat and visit (looking for third spaces) around the Saginaw area?”
When I receive questions like these, I, of course, immediately think of my hometown, but realize I should probably expand my scope a little wider if we’re looking to cater to the average student here on campus.
For preface, a third space is defined as “the social surroundings that are separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace,” according to Google.
Through this definition, we can understand that these third places, which have been requested, include cafes, bars, community centers, libraries, and more. These areas are in a sort of societal decline, as younger people continue to ask for the expansion of these opportunities.
With that being said, I’ll be listing off my top three restaurants, and top three cafes/coffee shops in the Tri-City area that I believe every student at SVSU should know about.
For restaurants, the first one that I enjoy is Fuzzy’s here in Saginaw. Located on Court Street, the family diner is known for its homemade breads, sandwiches, and local ice creams available for patrons that visit.
To me, their cinnamon bread is possibly one of the best purchases I have ever made, and I seriously would advise those interested to check it out.
Second is Sushi Palace, if you enjoy takeout. Located on Center Road, the restaurant boasts a plethora of rolls– both raw if you’re brave enough, and cooked/veggie rolls for those who may be hesitant to go all out.
With such a low price for as much as you get (as well as the options available), if you’re a college student who loves sushi, Sushi Palace needs to be on your radar.
Lastly, for restaurants, I say to check out Intermission Deli. Growing up in Bay City, I’ve been obsessed with Intermission since I could eat solids.
Their homemade bread, fast service, and great sandwiches were always a staple in our house growing up– especially their Ruben. Though the Saginaw location may not seem like that great of a restaurant, I personally consider it a hidden gem, especially if you don’t know the local trade secrets.
Now, moving onto third spaces, I would like to note that much of my opinion on these are things I personally either have enjoyed prior, or plan to visit, but still think they would fit on this list.
Starting with a coffee shop, again, living in Bay City, I’ve always had a soft spot for Harless and Hugh, located on Washington Avenue. I’m sure there are many out there that use the space for studying and such, probably wondering why I’m letting out one of the best local areas. I recommend the salted caramel latte!
Next is one that I haven’t had the opportunity to visit yet, but feel as though it would be more popular with university students than it currently stands; LoLoBee’s Lounge is located on S Linn Street in Bay City, and boasts their late night hours (12pm-12am), something that is uncommonly seen these days with these types of spaces.
Their list of drinks, as well as sweet and savory options for snacks allow those who are looking for an alternative space to be able to relax, and overall ensure the opportunities for those who are looking for these third spaces to bask in the opportunities available to them.
Last but not least would be Annie Mae’s Internet Cafe, located on Court Street. The menu, although small, includes sandwiches, salads, drinks, and even a “Taco Tuesday” option for those who may visit on this day. When looking online, it’s difficult to find the cafe’s website, but, from the various photos posted online, the cafe looks like a great option for those looking for a small, unknown place on campus.
