On Dec. 2 both the men and women’s track and field team competed in the starter of the 2023-2024 season. It was the Holiday Open held at SVSU.
Women’s:
Junior Alexa Keiser started the meet off by breaking the SVSU indoor record for the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:44.62, finishing in second place.
Senior Alona Olshevska won the 400-meter run with a time 54.6 seconds. She almost beat her PR, just .12 seconds off.
Senior Hanna Shroeder set a new PR in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.91 seconds.
Junior Grace Collett was also close to beating her PR, finishing just .13 seconds short on the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.96.
Sophomore Mikenna Borie beat her own PR in the 3,000-meter r un.
She finished in third with a time of 10:44.75.
Sophomore Taylor Moyer, Mallory Farmer, Makayla Fuerst, and Sophia Thelen worked together to finish in fourth place with a time of 4:12.15 in the 4×400 relay.
Senior Angelina Delbosque finished in the top-five for the SVSU’s women’s team with 7.91 in the 60-meter .
Sophomore Anna Alexander an Cheyenne Willamson, along with Moyer, with seventh-place finishes in their events.
Erika Jackson and Lynsey Amthor finished eighth in their events and Olivia Carpenter finished the women’s pentathlon with a scor e of 2,695.
Men’s:
Sophomore David Ferguson and Dominic Suliman started the men off with wins in both the 800-meter and 5,000-meter runs. Ferguson won the 800 with a time of 1:56.95 and Suliman won the 5K with a time of 14:26.12.
Kabanu Witherspoon, Quin Broussard, Daniel Barger, and Tyler Burrell placed second in the 4×400 with a time of 3:25.01.
Cameron Sherrill finished the 800 in third, ending with a time of 1:58.90. Burrell finished with a time of 49.60 in the 400, .12 seconds away fr om his PR.
The next meet will be the GVSU Holiday Open on Dec. 8. It will be the last meet held in 2023.
