Swing dancing club kick-starts new semester

Swing dancing club reunited for a new semester, dancing and welcoming new members on Sept. 11 in C 181.

Jamie Eichert, President of Swing Saginaw and second-year Elementary Education major, explains why she loves the club:

“[Swing dancing club] is just fun. It’s one of those things where you get to do just for the fun of it, and this isn’t really something you have to be good at. It’s not something that you have to perform or practice.”

The club meets every Monday from 7:30 to 9:30 outside in the President’s courtyard (weather permitting) to dance. Every session starts with a 30-minute lesson, followed by freestyle and line dances.

Ashely Goldberg, Vice-president and second-year Marketing Major, explains why she joined the club back in her freshman year:

“I was looking for ways to be more involved in the winter semester. Something in my gut drew me to it, so I went for the first time not expecting to like it, and I fell in love with it.”

It all began in Jan. 2023 when Jamie decided she missed swing dancing.

“I felt like swing dance was something I needed, so I got a couple of friends together and they were very supportive and the whole thing. We had our first little meeting and 15 people showed up,” Eichert said. “Then we had our first actual dance and there were like 20 people which was absolutely crazy. It just kept growing from there.”

Aside from being the founder of the swing dancing club, Eichert continues to reside as the president of the club. Her fellow E-board members consist of Goldberg, Vice-President Connor Beach, Secretary Marielle Hatfield and Treasurer Keegan Cater.

The Swing dancing club prides itself on being a safe space to just have fun as there are no dance competitions or showcases to worry about. It is a safe space to learn and socialize, and everyone can come and go as they please. “Well, I think a lot of people are surprised by how easy swing dancing is for a lot of people who’ve never danced before. It’s very open to beginners,” Eichert said.

To join, simply attend a meeting, or to learn more, follow their Instagram @saginawswing. No dance experience is required, and commitment isn’t necessary.

“Even if you don’t think you’re going to like it, just try it in,” Goldberg said. “Even if you don’t like to dance, it’s fun to just come and hang out with your friends.”
