On Feb. 18, SVSU’s women’s basketball team hosted Davenport University for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference. The team won against the Panthers with a score of 104-59.
Senior Kaitlyn Zarycki managed to score a record 44 points, sealing the win for SVSU. She also set a new single-game record for the team.
Four other plays scored double-digits and SVSU managed a shot of 63% from the floor. SVSU started off strong with senior Tyler Scheid winning the tip. She made a backdoor cut to open with a layup.
The Cardinals followed with a 10-second count in the backcourt. This led to a 17-2 run for SVSU. The team outscored Davenport 25-13 in the first.
Freshman Lauren Sollom held the defense by ending the quarter with a block. This allowed SVSU to hold its lead at 12.
Zarycki came into the second quarter hot and opened with a step-back from beyond the arc. Freshman Emma Dziezgowski made another only 20 seconds later.
Scheid buried yet another only one minute later. Zarycki and Dziezgowski closed out the half with Zarycki already at 27 points at the half.
The third quarter continued to see SVSU dominate on the court. Senior Tori DePerry scored the first goal of the fourth with a layup which put SVSU up by 23.
Senior Jessica Massey followed a threepoint jump shot by Davenport with a jumper as well.
Zarycki added to the score with free throws. Freshman Maggie Keinsley then followed with a shot, bringing the team up to 25.
Zarycki played just as well in the last quarter. She managed a total of 11 points. She hit a three-point jump shot which tied her score with the school record. She made yet another shot with 5:24 left on the clock, securing her the record-breaking score.
The team as a whole saw 28 more points in the fourth. This secured the Cardinals the game but also was the team’s first time breaking 100 points all season.
The team will play again against Purdue next week on Feb. 23. This game is away.
