Men’s basketball wins battle against Lake Superior State

On Jan. 21, the SVSU men’s basketball team took on Lake Superior State University (LSSU). They finished the game with a 79-73 win.

The team saw four players score doubledigit points. Senior Tyrik Singh came in hot with a career-high of 18 points. He also achieved seven rebounds.

Sophomore Freddie McIntosh followed with 13 points and freshman Chansey Willis Jr. had 12 points and five assists.

Junior Tre Garrett also added 12 points to the game but had nine rebounds and four assists. Junior Maurice Barnett and junior Ben Tew each scored nine.

Singh and Willis Jr. each a three-point jump that started a 6-2 lead for SVSU. LSSU came back and tied the score with a free throw and shot from beyond the arc.

McIntosh came in and started a 5-0 run which pushed SVSU into a 13-8 lead. Garrett assisted and pushed the score to 19-10 with a free throw. He did this with eight minutes left before the half.

LSSU then had a 5-0 run. They made five free throws and a three-point jumper. This put them in the lead with a 22-12 score.

The lead bounced 10 more times in four minutes until SVSU used a two-for-one to capture the last shot of the first.

LSSU came into the second half and tied the score with a layup. Tew then hit a shot and started another 5-0 run for SVSU. This gave them the lead with 52-45.

Singh followed that with a 6-0 run. This moved the advantage up to 11 with just 10 minutes remaining. Singh also managed a three which increased the teams lead 64-51.

LSSU followed up with a 6-0 run which cut the deficit to seven. Garret was able to make a layup that started yet another 5-0 run.

This brought the advantage back up to 12 points. Another 6-0 run by LSSU brought the score closer in the last 90 seconds. SVSU managed four-of-six free throws which gave them the win.

The next game will be on Jan. 28 in Detroit.
