Men’s basketball loses season opener at Malone University

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team had its season opener for the 2022-2023 campaign this past Friday.

The Cardinals traveled to Canton, Ohio to face off against Malone University in a GLIAC/GMAC Crossover game.

The Pioneers defeated the Cardinals by a score of 97 – 53.

Sophomore guard Freddie Mcintosh led the Cardinals with 10 points and added an additional four rebounds and five assists. Junior forward Maurice Bennet followed his teammate up with nine points and four rebounds, respectively. Sophomore forward Steven Post held his own in the paint and led the Cardinals with five rebounds. Post also had five points of his own while shooting perfect from the field.

The Cardinals remained competitive throughout the opening minutes, but Malone’s offense caught fire and went on a 29-6 run over an 11-minute span.

The Pioneers stretched its lead to a commanding 23 points with 6:25 to go in the first half. This deficit proved to be too much for the Cardinals and the team could never get back within striking distance.

Offensively, the Cardinals shot 32.0 percent from the field (16-50) while the Pioneers shot 54.4 percent (37-68).

The Pioneers had four players in double digits while the Cardinals only had one.

SVSU looks to learn from this season opening loss as it hosts Hillsdale College in the home opener at James E. O’Neil Arena. Tipoff is on Sunday at 3 p.m.
