
The SVSU baseball team had a week of winning games after returning from spring break spent at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
The team started the week with a game at Findlay on Tuesday resulting in a 13-9 win for the Cardinals.
Freshman JJ Arbini started on the mound, going 3.1 innings while fanning six. Sophomore Steven Hecht pitched 2.2 innings in relief, earning the win with five strikeouts. For the final two innings, sophomore Hunter Merillat came in to pitch.
In the top of the first, an RBI single by junior Martin Money brought sophomore Connor McClennen home, and junior Todd Paperd singled to score sophomore Hayden Jatczak, giving the Cardinals an early lead.
Freshman Reed Raymond hit an inside-the-park home run in the top of the second, bringing SVSU’s lead to 3-0.
A run by Findlay in the bottom of the second put the Oilers on the board, but SVSU quickly widened its lead with four runs in the top of the third.
Paperd hit a double to score Jatczak, junior Tucker Roe scored Paperd and Money on a two-run single and senior Andrew Burke laid down a sacrifice bunt giving Roe the chance to score and bringing the Cardinals to a 7-1 lead.
Findlay posted three runs bringing the score to 7-4 at the bottom of the fourth.
Following an uneventful fifth inning, SVSU scored five runs in the top of the sixth.
Paperd hit his fourth RBI of the game, scoring Jatczak and McClennen in a two-run single. Paperd came home after an RBI triple by freshman Austin Schweiger.
Sophomore Jaccar Watkins hit a double to score Schweiger and a single by Burke scored Watkins, bringing it to 12-4 SVSU.
Jatczak scored after a single by Roe, taking the Cardinals’ lead to 13-5.
Findlay tried to come back with four more runs, but couldn’t catch up to SVSU.

On Thursday the team claimed victory in its home opener, defeating Calvin University 10-5 and taking SVSU’s record to 7-7 overall.
Sophomore Kendall Anthes pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four runs, eight hits, and striking out three. Sophomore Tyler McLaren pitched 3.0 innings in relief, earning the win and allowing one run, two hits, and striking out one. Merillat pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the save and record four strikeouts.
A single by Paperd scored Jatczak making it 1-0 Cardinals in the bottom of the first.
In the bottom of the second, SVSU scored four runs to create a five-run lead.
A sacrifice fly by Raymond allowed freshman Maven Gordon to score.
McClennen drove home Watkins with an RBI single and continued to score on a double by Money while an RBI single by Paperd scored Jatczak.
The Knights got on the board with a run in the top of the third.
An RBI single by Raymond scored Gordon, bringing the score to 6-1 SVSU.
Following a run in the fourth inning, Calvin hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth taking it to 6-5 SVSU.
The Cardinals quickly extended their narrow lead to 8-5 with a two-run single by Raymond that scored Watkins and Gordon.
An RBI triple by Watkins scored Paperd and Roe to solidify the final score of 10-5 SVSU.
The team continued its winning streak at Lawrence Tech on Friday, claiming victory over the Blue Devils in a 6-0 shutout and taking the Cardinals to 8-7 overall.
Sophomore Christopher Schmees pitched 8.2 shutout innings to earn the win, allowing six hits, five walks, and striking out three.
Raymond relieved Schmees and got one last out in the ninth.
Sophomore Jeffrey Reseigh singled home Watkins in the top of the second to put SVSU on the board.
A two-run home run by Jatczak in the top of the fifth brought the score to 3-0 SVSU.
In the top of the fifth, Money scored on a double by Papier bringing it to 4-0.
A sacrifice fly by McClennen allowed Burke to score.
This along with a score by Raymond on an error by Lawrence Tech was enough to secure the Cardinals win.
Today the team will face Madonna University at home at 3:05 pm before hosting Lawrence Tech for a rematch on Wednesday at 3:05 pm.
