Following a week spent in Auburndale, Fla. competing in The Spring Games, the SVSU softball team split doubleheaders on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday, the team traveled to compete at Ohio Dominican University with the Cardinals falling to the home team 4-3 in game one but rebounded to win game two 6-3.
In game one, sophomore Alyssa Muench pitched 7.1 innings to get five strikeouts while allowing eight hits. Sophomore Emily Depew took the loss on the mound after relieving Muench in the final 1.1 innings, allowing one run, one hit and getting three strikeouts.
The game started slow with Ohio Dominican making it on the board first after a two-run single in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fifth, junior Sarah Gersch scored on an error to get SVSU in the game.
The game was tied 2-2 at the top of the sixth following a home run by senior Blasia Moyler.
Sophomore Leah Denome hit an RBI single to score junior Jackie Popko, taking it to 3-2 SVSU in the top of the seventh.
After tying things up in the bottom of the seventh, Ohio Dominion went on to take the win with a single in the bottom of the ninth.
Game two on Wednesday started off with junior Jaclyn Groves pitching 1.0 inning with senior Julia Mundy relieving her to take the win after 6.0 innings, allowing one run, three hits, and getting four strikeouts.
The first inning concluded with Ohio Dominion scoring two runs.
In the second, Popko hit a home run to get SVSU on the board.
Later in the inning, sophomore Maddie Campagna hit a sacrifice fly allowing Denome to score, and an RBI single by senior Julia Salisbury scored senior Meagan VerVaecke.
The team’s lead expanded in the third with Moyler hitting a double to score Denome and take the score to 4-2 SVSU.
A double by Gersch drove home sophomore Cam Coonan, and Gersch scored following a single by freshman Sara Moos bringing the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth.
Ohio Dominion scored once more later in the fourth but could not catch up to the Cardinals.
On Thursday, the team played another doubleheader at Tiffin University, losing 3-2 in the first game but coming back to win the
second 13-2 and moving the team to 11-7
overall.
The opening game went for 12 innings, with
neither team making it on the board until the
11th.
Senior Julia Mundy held things down in the
circle, preventing Tiffin from scoring for 10
innings while Coonan led the offensive in the
final innings.
VerVaecke hit a single at the top of the 11th
to open the game for the Cardinals. An RBI
single by Coonan brought it to 2-0 SVSU.
The Dragons responded by hitting two RBI
singles in the bottom of the inning to tie things
up.
The Cardinals weren’t able make a run in
the top of the 12th and a score by Tiffin in the
bottom of the inning sealed its 3-2 victory.
The day’s second game was pitched
by Depew who earned the win with nine
strikeouts, allowing two runs on three hits.
Sophomore Paige Kolinski dominated
the game with four RBIs and a double while
Coonan, Gersch, and Salisbury each scored
two hits.
A single in the first by Coonan got things
started for the Cardinals.
By the fifth inning, SVSU dominated with
seven runs to secure the 13-2 win.
