Baseball starts season with winning streak at away games

SVSU’s baseball team is undefeated with a record of 3-0 following their first week of play in Anderson, South Carolina.

In the Feb. 14 opening game of the season against Augusta, SVSU took a 1-0 lead on a sac fly from senior outfielder Joshua Riggs.

In the fourth inning, Riggs hit a homerun to left field that extended the lead to two runs.

Senior pitcher Brandon Wise pitched five innings for the Cardinals, striking out four batters and giving up three runs in his season debut.

In the fifth inning SVSU scored five runs, which were capped off by a threerun homerun for senior outfielder Collin Winters. Five more runs were scored by the Cardinals in the sixth inning, with two of the runs scoring on a double by junior infielder Andrew Burke.

Between the seventh and eighth innings, SVSU scored another six runs and closed out the game with an 18-7 win to start the year.

In their second South Carolina game on Feb. 15, SVSU scored another eight runs with an 8-2 win over Anderson.

Junior pitcher Jason Clark gave up two runs in the first inning but was able hold Anderson off the board for the next three innings.

Junior pitcher Eric Fritz pitched the final four and two-thirds innings while striking out seven batters and allowing no runs. Winter knocked in two runs in the third inning for SVSU, which tied the game at 2-2.

Freshman infielder Hunter Merillat added two RBI of his own after hitting a homerun in the top of the ninth inning.

During their Feb. 21 away game against West Virginia State, SVSU was able to win 13-8 and keep their perfect start to the season.

A three-run first inning gave the Cardinals a lead that they would not lose for the entirety of the game.

SVSU was able to add four runs in the second inning along with a four spot in the ninth, helping them to a win the game. Wise pitched five innings while allowing one earned run.

Riggs and Winters knocked in a run each, while sophomore infielder Mitch Morley drove in three more for the Cardinals.

Baseball continues gameplay February and March at a slew of away locations before they return home March 17 for their home-opener against Aquinas.
