Softball turns it around with pair of convincing wins

The Lady Cardinals earned two victories over Siena Heights on Monday, March 25. The team topped the Saints 7-6 in the first game and 12-8 in the second. The wins came after dropping six of their last seven games.

Head coach Todd Buckingham likes the way his team has been fighting through the first stretch of the 2019 season. He wants the players to keep gaining confidence in themselves and in each other so they can really hit their stride as a group.

“[It’s] been an up and down start to the season so far, but that happens sometimes when you have seven new starters,” Buckingham said. “Right now, we just have to keep working to get into a rhythm with our young nucleus to keep getting consistent results.”

The Lady Cards have been led by four big bats this season.

Senior Aubree Mouthaan has been a great leader, while behind her are a trio of sophomores in catcher Blasia Moyler, rightfielder Allie Kolacki and first baseman Shelby Misiak.

Mouthaan has high hopes for herself and her team as the season continues.

“Even with the young team that [we] have this year, we’re getting better every game,” she said. “Going into the upcoming games, we are going to have to come out aggressively and smart to continue our win streak.”

The Lady Cards are looking to keep their win streak going after winning both games in their doubleheader at Siena Heights.

“Monday versus Siena Heights was one of the first days where we had a ‘no quit’ attitude in our approach,” Buckingham said. “[We] came in swinging very well, and even when we faced adversity early, we rallied back to keep our composure.”

Senior Becky Corbett loved the way her team performed on Monday, but still saw room for improvement.

“[We] showed a lot of grit and determination after giving up seven runs in the first inning. But all day, we swung the bats and played like we knew we could and pulled away for the wins.”

The Lady Cards took on the Ashland Eagles on Sunday, March 31, which concluded after this edition of The Valley Vanguard went to press.

This week, the team will travel to Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 2, for a doubleheader against the Parkside Rangers at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
