The Cardinals men and women’s track and field teams hosted the annual
SVSU Classic on Friday Jan. 11. SVSU faced off against Davenport University in a one-on-one team track and field indoor meet. It was the Cardinals’ first meet back from the month-long winter break.
Both groups had several standouts, including juniors Jamelle Russell and Travon Phil- lips, who both respectively came in first and second place in the 60-meter dash finals with times of 6.94 and 7.01.
“It (was) nice to get back on the track and show the coaching staff the work that we put in over the last month,” Russell said.
Senior Ryan Kelly also had a great day, posting a distance of 18.04 meters in the shot put. Kelly took first place in the meet and set a new indoor school record as well.
Junior Carter Eckhardt and senior Keith Rodriguez also finished first and second respectively in the 600-meter dash final with times of 1:23.44 and 1:24.40.
On the women’s side, junior Lauren Huebner placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.44. She also placed first in the long jump with a distance of 5.67 meters.
Freshman Alicia Aldrich posted a distance of 14.32 meters in the shot put while sophomore Sarah Rezler took second in the high jump competition with a height of 1.53 meters.
Rezler was happy with her mark for the day, but will continue to push for more as the indoor season continues.
“I did pretty well (Friday), coming off of winter break,” Rezler said. “(It) was a good indicator of how the next few meets will be, and I’m looking forward to continually raise the bar for myself.”
Head coach Rod Cowan was pleased with the performance of his athletes and looks for- ward to seeing their growth.
“Dual meets are always good for the team,” Cowan said. “It helps the athletes compete with each other and the other school and forces them to stay honest and ready for the bigger meets.”
The Cardinals will host the Doug Hansen Open this Friday, Jan. 18. The first event will begin at 2:30 p.m.
