A brand new RSO is on campus this semester! The Snake Eyes Society is a board game club seeking to create community and fun.
“We strive to bring the joys of the tabletop to campus and build an inviting place for all,” said Charlie Shick, a sophomore psychology major and president of the club. “No matter if you’re a veteran of the hobby with hundreds of games or you just really want to play Uno, our goal is to make space for people to come together in one of the world’s oldest pastimes.”
Meetings offer something for everyone — from Go Fish to strategy-heavy four-hour tabletop games. Members are free to stop by and join in the fun or just stay to hang out. Will Sariol, a junior secondary education major and vice president of the club, spoke about this versatility.
“You can walk in and we’ll find a board game for you,” he said. “There’s not too much structure or anything, so everything is very welcoming. If there’s a way to become friends faster than playing a board game with someone, I haven’t found it!”
The group first formed when Shick and Sariol, both members of a gaming club in high school, decided to bring the sense of community they felt to SVSU.
“Back in high school our vice president Will and I were members of a gaming group,” Shick said. “When toiling through … freshman year … we reminisced about the joys of gaming and seeing how it was an untapped market made us think we should do something about it.”
Along with treasurer Gabi Azar, a junior occupational therapy major, they launched the club earlier this semester. She shared that her lifelong love of game nights helped inspire her to join the club’s executive board.
Since tabling at the Red Pride Picnic, the club has seen its membership grow. Students often bring friends or roommates, and many end up staying for the atmosphere as much as the games.
“I’ve seen people who don’t even know each other’s names laughing together over party games,” Shick said. “That’s what’s responsible for our success so far.”
In addition to weekly meetings, the club plans to host larger specialty game nights throughout the year. On Friday, Oct. 24, they are planning to host a Halloween-themed session of the social deduction mystery game “Blood on the Clocktower.”
“People … should keep an eye on our Instagram for our next Clocktower night,” Sariol said. “We’re confident it’ll be a hit, and if it is, we’ll do more!”
Above all, the Snake Eyes Society prides itself on being a place where anyone can find a welcoming community.
“There’s a game for everyone out there, and we’re here to help you try out any game without pressure or judgment,” Shick said. “We’re all here to have fun without pressure or worry.”
The Snake Eyes Society meets on Tuesdays at 8 p.m in Curtiss 223. Any and all students are encouraged to stop by and even bring their favorite game.
“We would love to have you!” Azar said. “Come find a new game to love. You’ll leave with good memories and maybe even some new friends.”
