This Fall, Saginaw Valley State University’s Xi Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. unites Detroit Lions fans on campus by hosting watch parties for the 2025-26 NFL season.
The Detroit Lions watch parties, hosted in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, are located in Curtiss Hall (C100), where all students are welcome. These parties are a chance for students to come together to share their passion for the Lions.
The Detroit Lions have continued to hold their dominance in the league over the past few years with back-to-back NFC North Championship titles and playoff appearances. As a result, the team’s fan base continues to grow each year.
With both Kappa Alpha Psi and OMSA being committed to service and engaging with the campus community, this event allows students to feel a sense of belonging on campus. Whether it is football fans or students trying to create more bonds, this event is meant for everyone.
Kappa Alpha Psi president, KJ Jackson, commented on the event.
“We wanted to create a fun and welcoming space on campus where students could come together, relax, and support our home state team,” he said. “As an organization, we are glad to bring people together, and we plan to keep making each watch party better than the last.”
Students who plan to attend these watch parties can expect more than just the game. Light refreshments and food are provided at the event, as well as an army of dedicated Lions fans.
Jaiden Dickman, a sophomore elementary education major, commented on the event.
“I think it is great that Alpha Kappa Psi is hosting these watch parties on campus,” Dickman said. “It is such a great dynamic to watch the game with other passionate Lions fans. It adds more of an exciting element to the game, and it is always great to meet new people on campus.”
With Ford Field being about two hours away from campus, and the Lions having the highest ticket prices in the NFL, it is not feasible for students to attend all of the games in person. However, these watch parties are a way of bringing a piece of Ford Field to campus.
“The turnout has been pretty decent. Students are enjoying a place to come together as a community to watch good football. It’s clear people are enjoying this event,” Jackson stated. “Anytime the Lions score, the whole room cheers and gets excited as if we were at Ford Field.”
