Netflix needs to renegotiate their deal with the CW Network in order to keep some of the best shows on their platform. Previously, all of the CW shows were allowed to exclusively be on Netflix for five years after the final season was uploaded to the platform. However, in 2019, the CW Network and Netflix decided not to renew their contract. Now some of the most beloved shows on Netflix are starting to disappear and will be doing so over the next few years.
When I say shows, I am talking about some of the best comfort shows that are known to man. Riverdale, All American, The Flash, In the Dark and so many others are leaving Netflix within the next four years. This time frame spans exactly from the dates Dec. 18, 2025, to Dec. 30, 2029. It is heartbreaking to say the least. However, a solution would be for Netflix to renew the contract.
Not only would taking these shows off of Netflix take away entertainment for millions of people, but it would also take away the comfort shows like I mentioned before. According to the USCD Guardian, comfort shows can allow people to feel joyous during hard times as well as make them feel at ease. These shows are a safety net for many, so it would honestly just be unethical to take them away.
I would just like to take a moment of silence for my comfort show that was recently taken off Netflix. On Sept. 5, 2024, my beloved show, Jane the Virgin, left Netflix for good. This was quite a travesty for me and thousands of other fans across the globe. Our only option is now to buy the whole series. With all five seasons, this would cost around 100 dollars. We are not all made out of money, Netflix. Please do us a solid.
The reason why I am pushing this on Netflix so heavily is because they are the most popular streaming service in the world. Everybody who has the platform deserves to experience the greatness of CW shows. I mean, just watching one episode of one of these shows makes you hooked for life. An extended contract would be a saving grace to our society.
I do believe that Netflix would be the most plausible option for The CW Network to make another contract with, but there is talk that the shows could go to Max. Getting into the logistics of these streaming services, according to Flix Patrol, 282,720,000 people have Netflix while only 99,000,000 have Max. Netflix is almost three times more popular than Max, so the CW shows would get more traction there anyway.
If Netflix does not renew the contract, I would be lying if I said that there were not any great shows on the platform. Outer Banks, Squid Games, Stranger Things, and Bridgerton are just a few of the many notable Netflix Originals. However, if they were able to keep the CW shows on in addition to these it would be the cherry on top. Let’s be real, who does not love a good variety of shows?
If your favorite CW show has not left Netflix yet, you might not even realize how upsetting it is to not be able to watch it when you feel like it. I promise it will be harder than you expect. All we can do for now is hope Netflix can hear us out to keep The CW Network. Also, if you do not believe they need an extension, then I think we need to take a serious look at your show choices.
Please Netflix, we beg and plead for you to make a new deal with The CW Network. Our comfort shows all rely on it, and the world would be a much happier place if you were to do so.
