Optimistic club is an SVSU RSO that meets on Tuesdays at 8 PM in Science East 126 to spread positivity to the SVSU community. There is no attendance policy, and anyone is welcome to come. There are no fees or dues.
Mary Sopocy, a third-year elementary education major, is the president of the OC. “We are open to any major and that is the best part about OC,” she said. “you can come and meet people who are similar to you and study something different or meet someone totally different from you.”
“Students should … join OC because we offer students the ability to have a stress-free hour of their day,” she continued. “Our goal at OC is to help everyone feel seen and heard and to leave feeling happy and less stressed or anxious.”
“OC is a great way to make friends,” she said. “At the end of each semester, we do our annual sticky note event where we make sticky notes and hang them up around campus to spread optimism and positivity before finals,”
The OC does several events per semester, on and off campus. “Each month we do one volunteer event … [and] a craft night and we also do a group bonding night where we go out to eat together or do something fun such as bowling and get to hang out off campus and get to know each other.”
Recently, they made thank-you cards for the maintenance workers on campus. They also hosted a Valentine’s Day craft night.
Bella Hazen, a second-year physical education and health major, is the secretary for the OC. “More students should join because it is really nice to get to know other people in a non-stressful environment,” she said. Specific crafts and activities that the OC does weekly can be found on their Instagram: @svsu_oc.
