Two Cardinal athletes competed at Central Michigan University’s Jack Skoog Open on January 13, 2024.

Pole vaulters Deven Varela and Ciera Weber both took home first place.

Their head coach is Rod Cowan, supported by assistant coaches Evie Kammeyer, Eric Phillips, and Sam Black.

Varela set a new personal best, clearing the bar at 4.57 meters. He knocked Olivet out of the water by 0.62 meters. He is a second-year, originally from Jackson, MI.

Weber, Saginaw Valley’s current pole vault school record holder, won with her clearance of 3.50 meters.

She won the top spot to Central Michigan University by 0.3 meters. Weber is a fourth-year elementary education major from Fowler, MI.

Numerous schools were in attendance at this meet: Albion College, Alma College, Central Michigan University, Olivet College, and Western Michigan University, to name some.

The competition was tough, but we love to see the Cardinals come out on top.

We look forward to seeing the Cards do well in the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons.
