RSO Spotlight: Philosophy Club holds Pierce events

Tyler Head, President of Philosophy Club and fifth year Psychology major, sat down with the Vanguard to talk more about the Philosophy Club, an RSO on SVSU’s campus.

Serving as president for the last two academic school years, Head described his organization as “an opportunity to have philosophical discussion with your peers. We like to get together in small groups, and we’ll have a prompt that we talk about, and we just think about different topics.”

When talking about the semester prior, Head mentioned an event Philosophy Club had held twice last semester.

“[It’s an opportunity] for students and professors to meet at Pierce Road Bar and Grill for pizza, conversations about philosophy and to feel more comfortable in the department.” Head said. “Otherwise, students may not get the opportunity to do so, and learn more about what the professors may have to offer knowledge-wise outside of the classroom.”

Head described the usual turnout of the Club.

“We usually get anywhere between six to ten students at each meeting,” he said. “and we have two officers, including myself– a president and vice president. But, since it is my last year, we are considering adding more positions to allow for further leadership opportunities in the Philosophy Club.”

When talking about the semester ahead, Head was excited to mention that he had a few plans in the works.

“I want to throw an on-campus event for people to come to. It’s not solidified yet, but while we figure that out, we’re also looking at how volunteering will work as well.” Head described. “But we also, of course, have more events at Pierce Road for pizza in the future.”

Head continued, speaking about his experiences with philosophy and his feelings about the club

“I’m very passionate about philosophy, and I feel like it’s applied to everything the department offers. There are great courses that allow you to be immersed, and it helps with a lot of concepts that might be difficult to grasp in other courses.” He said. “It can even help in the courses that have nothing to do on the topic [of philosophy]. I really would recommend for students to get involved with philosophy courses if it interests them– same thing with Philosophy club, it might just be helpful in your studies.”

The Philosophy Club meets every Tuesday from 7-8 in Brown 204. To learn more about the RSO either through SVSU Engage, or on Instagram, @svsuphilosophy.
