Following a postponed home meet against Wayne State on Jan. 8, the SVSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to Hillsdale to compete on Jan 15.
In a dual matchup versus Ashland and Hillsdale, both SVSU teams held their own and walked away victorious in many events.
For the men, junior Alejandro Robles Ruiz won the 400-meter individual medley event with a time of 4:14.92 and took the men’s 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 4:52.11.
Ruiz also teamed up with freshman Joao Pedro Noguera, junior Christian Rottier and freshman Josh Rottier to win the men’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:34.86.
Junior Arthur Marques took the men’s 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:48.85.
Senior Kyle Amick won the men’s 50- yard freestyle with a time of 21.88. Amick later joined freshman Eric Slabbert, senior Sanders Modglin and freshman Gavin Crews to win the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.08.
Slabbert also received recognition individually, winning the men’s 200-yard backstroke event with a time of 1:57.26.
Senior Zachary Rychel took first place in the men’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.51.
In diving, sophomore Adrien McGill took both events while beating his personal bests along the way.
McGill won the men’s 1 meter dive with 268.65 points, up from 243.30 points, and the men’s 3-meter dive with 279.55 points, up from 255.30 points.
Senior Libby Caird also took both diving events for the women, beating her previous best of 255.82 points in the women’s 1 meter dive with 269.40 points and winning the women’s 3-meter dive with 276.00 points.
Senior Sidney Shipps won the women’s 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 11:01.54, beating a previous best of 11:03.23.
Senior Tonya Guryeva won several events, taking the women’s 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:56.09 and the women’s 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:20.22.
Next up, the SVSU teams will head to Grand Rapids to take on Davenport University at 1p.m. on Jan. 22.
