Volleyball takes first at Clarion Tournament

Saginaw Valley State University’s volleyball team got off to a hot start as they went 4-0 in the Clarion tournament to win the championship.

In the Cardinals first match of the season, they defeated Adelphi in four sets.

Saginaw Valley won the first set 25-20 behind a 7-0 run that helped SVSU reach 23 points in the match.

In the second set SVSU fell 25-23 after they fell behind by five late in the set.

During the third set Saginaw Valley used an early five point run to take the lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-21.

In the final set the Cardinals used another early five point run to take the lead and eventually won the set 25-17, giving them the 3-1 victory.

Senior outside hitter Maria Vukaj led the Cardinals with 19 kills in the match.

Saginaw Valley’s second game was against Ursuline, which the Cardinals won again in four sets.

After Ursuline took the first set 25-23, SVSU won the next three to pull off the 3-1 win.

Saginaw Valley fell behind 6-1 early in the second set, but used two four point runs to eventually win the set 25-23.

In the third set the Cardinals got out to a 4-0 lead and eventually finished off the set with a score of 25-20.

A 12-3 run to start the final set gave the Cardinals a good hold on the match as they were able to win the final set 25-14, winning the match by a score of 3-1.

Vukaj recorded another 13 kills which was the most by an SVSU player in the match.

In the first set of the third match the Car- dinals fell behind early, losing the first set 25-17 against New Haven.

Saginaw Valley used another early four point run to hold off New Haven in the second set by a score of 25-22.

During the third set SVSU fell behind 11- 5, but was able to crawl their way back and win the set by a score of 25-22.

In the fourth and final set of the match, SVSU found themselves with a 16-12 lead and was able to finish off the set by out-scoring New Haven 25-22 for another 3-1 victory.

In the Cardinals final match of the tournament against the host team of Clarion University, SVSU pulled off yet another 3-1 victory.

After falling behind 15-10 the Cardinals used a four-point run to close the gap and eventually win the set 25-23.

After dropping the second set 25-15, SVSU was able to come back and win the third set by a score of 25-21 after an early three-point run.

In the fourth set SVSU closed out the match 25-20 while closing the game out on a 3-0 run

After defeating Clarion 3-1 the Cardinals were able to finish off their tournament run with a perfect 4-0 record to start the season.

SVSU has another tournament next weekend at Malone University where they will play another four matches on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11.
