Men’s basketball split its two home games against Northern Michigan over the weekend.
SVSU was able to win the first game, held Jan. 15, by a score of 83-73.
Junior guard Myles Belyeu led the Cardinals in scoring with 19 points. He was able to add six rebounds and one assist in the game.
Senior guard Malik Ellison added 17 points of his own along with six blocks and six rebounds.
Senior guard Delano Smith provided 18 points, two steals and two rebounds in his 24 minutes off the bench.
Despite winning in the first matchup, SVSU was not able to win their second game against Northern Michigan on Jan. 16, losing by a score of 69-57.
SVSU was only able to score 19 points in the first half, leading to a 37-19 halftime deficit. The Cardinals scored 38 points in the second half.
Smith had 36 minutes off the bench for the Cardinals and was able to lead them in scoring. He pulled down 11 rebounds, which allowed him to secure a double- double.
Ellison scored 17 points for SVSU and was able to get a steal, two assets and two rebounds.
Belyeu added 13 points and six rebounds during his 38 minutes of playing time. SVSU’s record moves to 1-3 after the split this weekend and its two losses to Grand Valley State University last weekend.
The previous games ended with scores of 76-59 and 72-67.
SVSU will continue its season next weekend with two games against Ashland on Jan. 22 and Jan. 23, played at home.
