Campus life would benefit from increased dining service hours over the weekends

I have a serious bone to pick with whoever is running the Declining Balance system.

Why can’t I get Subway or Panda Express on a Saturday, and why can’t I use it at the bookstore?

I think it’s absurd that dining locations other than the Marketplace are closed on the weekends. I understand that we don’t want student workers to have to come in, but honestly, that would be the best time to work—there’s no classes! That’s also the prime time for people to sit in the Cardinal Commons or Café for a full day and study.

Career Services’ website also states that an average of 850 students work on campus every semester. Surely, that’s enough to cover a weekend shift.

I know a lot of people go home for the weekend or are commuters, but a lot of people also stay. The library still has a ton of weekend studiers, including myself. If we could get at least one location open where we could get some decent food, I bet a lot more people would want to stay and study.

Recently, Starbucks was open before football games, but that really only helped guests to the university who don’t pay tuition! It’s crazy that Starbucks can be open but not Subway for people who pay tuition, and likely, housing.

Think about how many younger students come for college visits on Fridays, when these locations are only open until 2 pm—they would likely spend money on food here, given the opportunity.

I can guarantee there are students living on campus who would love the opportunity to work on the weekends. This would also create more on-campus jobs or hours for the existing workers, which is always a need!

Personally, I think these shorter hours are more to benefit the university than students. If we can’t spend our DB on the weekends, (when we’re most available), we won’t use it on their resources, and then they can keep the money.

It’s a known fact that DB rolls over from Fall to Winter semesters, but not from Winter to Fall. Whatever we don’t use in the Winter semester, is SVSU’s to keep. This, alone, is ridiculous, but we should be able to spend it wherever we want whenever we want to if they’re going to keep it regardless.

Sure the C-Store is open, but only if you want a snack or a slushie, and Papa Johns is open, but only after dark. Not to mention, that’s all on one side of campus. Students who live in Pine Grove would have to walk a half-mile to even get to the Doan building.

If Starbucks can be open on Saturdays, so can places with actual food for students who already pay housing and tuition!
